Selling Advertising for Your Podcast
Selling Advertising for Your PodcastSelling Advertising for Your PodcastBlogs swept the internet in popularity but it took a while for advertisers to take notice. However, podcasting has gained instant attention with the ad world and the reach they have is attracting everyone from small business advertisers to companies around the globe. Its a multi-million dollar industry - so, how can you tap into it? Selling the Space Selling advertising on your podcast is much like selling advertising space on a website. Unlike selling a banner on a per-click basis, though, a simple podcast ad can be inserted into your podcast and left there. Selling your podcasting ad space can be quite appealing since podcasts are generally free. This revenue can help you cover the cost of producing your podcast and create better content so you can gain even more listeners. Commercial Placement Keep commercials limited and control their placement carefully. Some podcasters insert a commercial at the be ginning of the podcast, some have a commercial in the middle and some have one at the end. Some even use the beginning, middle and end spaces to insert commercials.Be sure youre not bombarding the listener with commercial after commercial, though. Many podcasting experts warn against putting an ad at the beginning of your podcast. They say a commercial right off the top detracts from the listeners excitement of hearing your podcast. Instead of listening to your podcast right away, they have to hear a commercial first. Commercial Length Most podcast listeners are fine with a 15-second commercial in the podcast.??Two minutes is way too long, and even 60 seconds is a stretch. By keeping the commercial length short and limiting the placement, you can continue to serve your listeners first. You dont want to turn your podcast into a smattering of commercials that detracts from the hard work you put into your podcast and doesnt give your listeners anything valuable. Whos Listening? Auto advertisers are really jumping on the podcast advertising bandwagon. Honda, Toyota, Lexus, Volvo and more are testing the podcasting waters.A majority of podcasts arent going to be able to gain these kinds of advertisers. What you can do instead is target those who may listen to your podcast. By evaluating the type of podcast youre releasing, youre able to know who your potential advertisers are at the same time. Youll also want to know how many listeners your podcast has. Advertisers will want to know how many people their ad could potentially reach before buying the space. Podcasting Ad Rates The value of a podcast is hard for both podcasters and advertisers to gage this early in the game. Audibles WordCast is providing a tafelgeschirr that allows podcasters to see how many people are downloading your podcast to help you establish an advertising rate card. The service charges the podcaster up to five and a half cents per podcast download. The info WordCast gathers helps the podcaster determine exactly who the listeners are and what they are downloading. Sponsorships Over Advertising An alternative to podcast advertising is to find a sponsor for your podcast. Georgia-Pacific entered into a six-figure deal with a parenting podcast called Mommycast. A 15-year-old girl in Texas has sponsors for her EmoGirlTalk podcast that include an acne treatment product called Natures Cure and the domain name provider GoDaddy.com. Sponsorships generally have the podcaster mentioning the sponsor within the podcast. Dont underestimate the value of a sponsor. Many podcasters have found more success by getting a solid sponsor than selling podcast advertising space on a regular basis. No matter how you pursue advertising for your podcast, just make sure your content doesnt suffer. Otherwise, you wont gain any new listeners and youll lose the following you had, ultimately losing your advertisers in the process.

Pitch Your Way Over $100k
Pitch Your Way Over $100kPitch Your Way Over $100kTips to help you prepare your 15-second networking pitch. So, what do you do? Its often the first question youre asked when networking, and its certainly not easy to answer when youre looking for a new job. Even if youre currently employed, it can be difficult to explain what you do for a living. If youre uncomfortable pitching yourself and your skills, youre not alone. Here are some tips to help you pitch your way into a new position.Skip the kitchen-sink pitchMany job seekers make the mistake of telling their entire life histories. Theyll tell you theyre experts in everything from advertising to marketing to financial planning, and they could even answer phones or wait tables if they had to.The trouble with this approach is that no one wants to hire a generalist. They want to hire an expert who can fill the specific position they have open. So focus on your expertise and the skills needed for the job that you really want.Focus your en ergyWhen looking for a job, you may face the paradox of choice Many great ones out there might be good for you. So, like many job seekers, you might float from one great-sounding job description to the next. But the key is to figure out the one thing you absolutely need in your next position and build that into your pitch.Holly, a client I recently worked with, was certain of two things that she wanted to move back to Japan and needed a high-level, challenging position to support this move. So, she told everyone she met, I am going to Japan - yes, phrased in the present tense. Thus, every conversation she had was focused on Japan, and she was easily able to mention how her excellent interpersonal skills would be the perfect fit for a company in Japan. (She landed a job as a fundraiser for a major university with a campus in Japan.)Sam, on the other hand, had already found his perfect job posted online, although the company name wasnt listed. After a little industry research, Sam di scovered the hiring company, and fruchtwein importantly he found out his former Sunday school teacher was employed there. Sam landed the job by telling his teacher why hed be a great candidate for the specific position. She agreed and immediately made an introduction for him. He was invited to come in for an interview the next day and joined the company as its CFO within 30 days of seeing the ad posted online. You never know when an opportunity is going to present itself in the virtual or real world, so be koranvers you have your pitch ready.Answer the top four questionsBy answering these four questions, youll be able to create an elevator pitch you can deliver in just 15 seconds. After all, every second counts when you see that perfect job advertised online or you hear about it at a networking event.Remember, pitching yourself is all about putting your best foot forward and letting your audience know why you make a remarkable candidate.Who are you?Introduce yourself using your first and last names. This simple step is the most important. When youre asked, So, what do you do? at a networking event, you want to be sure the listener remembers your nameWhat do you do?Be as specific as possible. Dont try to be too clever in your answer because it can be confusing. Instead, keep your explanation simple, but cover all the necessary details. If people dont know or cant explain exactly what you do, they can never refer job leads to you or recommend you to others. For example, instead of saying that youre a photographer, you could say, Im a professional photographer with 20 years of experience who specializes in high-end fashion. What makes you the best at what you do?Dont squander that chance to make a first impression. Stand out in a positive way. Let your audience know what makes you better than all the other candidates out there. To continue with our photographer example, you could say something like, My clients include Versace and Kenneth Cole (assuming, of course, thats true).Whats your call to action? What is your ideal next step after this meeting? Most job seekers have a very vague call to action. They end their conversation with something like, Let me know if you hear of anything. Thats not so compelling. Youre much better off saying something like, Id like to invite you out to lunch to learn mora about how you got into this industry. Though it might sound a little clich, the lets do lunch concept still works.Test-drive your pitchYou might not love this idea, but you need to take your new 15-second pitch out for a test drive. Practice makes perfect. So go to as many networking events as you can. I like speed networking events offered in many cities because theyre fast-paced and you meet a lot of different people. They also force you to be very concise about who you are and what you do. When youre delivering your pitch to people, take note of what seems to get people excited, but also where they get confused. These are the areas that youll need to refine until they are perfect.

How to Email Your Cover Letter the Right Way
How to Email Your Cover Letter the Right WayHow to Email Your Cover LetterHow to Email Your Cover Letter the Right WayI always say the best post topics come straight from real job seekers (like you). And this week, my idea came from a former co-worker who recently went through the whole job search process. She had two questions Whats the best subject line for an schmelzglas in response to a job ad? and Should you attach the titel letter to the email, or copy and paste it into the body of the email? I always wondered this myself, so I did some research and heres the consensusBest Email Subject LineJane Johnson resume for sales service positionIts straightforward and informative. It tells the recipient who you are, what youre sending, and why youre sending it.This isnt a concrete formula, however. Since some job ads require you mention a job posting ID number when you apply, you should substitute the name of the position with the number. Example Jane Johnson resume for Job 5527.Best Wa y to Include Your Cover LetterCopy and paste your cover letter into the body of the email. Why is this the preferred method? Three reasons 1) It gives the recipient one less attachment to open, 2) It gets to the point faster than writing the awkward here is my resume and cover letter mumbo jumbo, and 3) It gives you the ability to make an impact as soon as the recipient opens your email. However, if you send your cover letter out usings cover letter builder, the application will paste a copy of your letter in the email and add one as an attachment. This way, employers can see your value up front and have the option to save the attachment too.Need to build a cover letter?Pongos Cover Letter Builder provides over a dozen cover letter templates with fill-in-the-blank sample text, best practice advice, and samplephrases to help you get started. You can even email your cover letter directly from your account.Build your cover letter todayIn this case, some of the typical cover letter rules would not apply. While a regular cover letter would include To and From addresses, email requires a different format. Skip the To and From but include the date, reference line, greeting, body, professional closing, and signature. Heres an example of what an email cover letter would look likeBe sure to attach your resume to your email. And as always, refer to the companys job posting and apply, using whatever guidelines they specify. Adhering to the employers guidelines will not only ensure your documents get to the right place at the right time, it will prove that you pay attention to details and follow instructions

Lessons in how to be an overnight success from a 14 time Grammy winner
Lessons in how to be an overnight success from a 14 time Grammy winnerLessons in how to be an overnight success from a 14 time Grammy winnerJust because Dan Tyminskis name isnt immediately familiar to you, doesnt mean its unknown to the Grammy committee. The bluegrass phenom, best known as George Clooneys singing voice in O Brother Where Art Thou, and the vocalist on Aviciis Hey Brother, is also the long-standing mandolin and guitar player/vocalist in Alison Krausss band Union Station. Despite releasing several solo albums over the years, it welches last falls release of his new solo album Southern Gothic that caused a flurry of attention including Tyminskis first solo artist appearances on Good Morning America and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. I cannot tell a lie. Until a small-ish concert in New York early this year, I was familiar with the voice but not the man. I was fruchtwein impressed with the fact that Tyminski possesses a giant talent and what seems like a modest ego. H e spoke with Ladders about some of the things that go into creating an overnight success.Stay true to your ethicsIve been doing it a long time, but its so different, said Tyminski about his musical career shift. Its so weird to have been doing what you do for this long and still have it feel brand new Tyminski continued.Ive played a small niche music for most of my life on the large scale with Alison. Bluegrass doesnt touch as many people as pop and rock and other genres. Its the energy Ive always loved. Its as different as Ive ever done, though I use the same process, Tyminski said. Most crucial though, I use the same code of musical ethics - we just pointed ourselves in a different direction. Even though its a bigger umgebung now, I dont think Ive had to change who I am at all. I feel Im always the same guy Ive always been- just playing louder.Own your reputation, own your successIn the past, Tyminski was recognized as part of a band bearing his name or that of someone else. With his updated sound, came the updated and streamlined band name as well- simply his last name. Tyminski said, I process it all a little differently now, not because my name is on the marquee Im attached to the songs because my name is on them.He shared an anecdote about playing on Good Morning America and how the producers wanted to change a lyric in the song Temporary Love which euphemistically deals with drug use When they said change the lyric, I just stopped. In all my years of performing, Ive known that you make the adjustment and move on. This time I was passionate because its my lyric.End result? Tyminski performed a different song.Stay enthusiasticAnyone who says they dont get excited when they win a Grammy is probably lying, Tyminski said. Especially when youre talking about industry people who live it whodo it. Its not a vote you can buy. You cant do a huge amount of press and then win a Grammy. Its an important thing. Very exciting. Every single time youre sitting there an d they call your name.Treat every success as an overnight successDespite looking at my career from several vantage points I realize that you get excited because you always live in the moment. Everything you try to do, you try to surpass. Tyminski said. There have been a few things that elevated my career so quickly. When I moved from Vermont to Nashville to play Bluegrass - boom thats an overnight success. Playing with Alison - boom thats an overnight success. There are things that make you say BOOM I made it. But its really an entire lifetime of playing music and understanding that each success leads to the next.Hold onto the butterfliesCuriously enough, the song that brought Tyminski the most recognition - and over 130 million views on YouTube - left Tyminski uncredited. Hey, Brother didnt even have my name on it Tyminski admitted.I was recognized very quickly for that song, but its more that I find myself still grateful that I get to do what I love,Tyminski said. I still get ex cited when I play. I spend the first 35-45 seconds of every concert with butterflies the way I did when I was a teenager. It takes the first song before I can chill out. Even though Ive done it a while, its everything every time.

How to Make More Money in Sales
How to Make More Money in SalesHow to Make More Money in SalesWhen it comes to careers with a high-income potential, few can compete with sale. But just being in sales doesnt mean that you will earn a high income. There is no secret to sales except hard work, determination and a positive attitude. If you find yourself needing to earn mora money, you are causing yourself mora harm than good. The Problem of Need Remember the last time that you were hungry. Very hungry. Now ask yourself, What did I eat to satiate your hunger? If you are like most, you ate the first thing that didnt disgust you that you could find. Your meal probably didnt fit into any health or diet plan that you have in place and was consumed just to get rid of the hunger pains. Need drives behaviors that are often not in alignment with our wants or desires. Need makes us do things that we normally wouldnt do. So when you find yourself needing to earn more money, you will, most likely, do things in your job that yo u wouldnt do without the need. Examples of need-driven behavior include trying too hard close a sale when a more elegant approach is called for or accepting a win-lose sale that finds you earning commission while your customer does not receive what they fully expected. Lastly, visiting with a customer with dollar signs in your eyes is an almost certain way to lose rapport along with any potential to make a sale. Replace Need With Intention Regardless of your feelings surrounding the Law of Attraction, a significant amount of credible evidence indicates that those with a clear purpose achieve more than those without a sense of purpose and direction. If you need to earn more money, turning that need into an intention to earn more money places you in a significantly more powerful emotional state. As an example, notice the difference you feel when you hope for something and when you expect something. The more powerful emotional state you are in, the more resourceful and effective yo u will become. Clarity Is Power Stating that you want or intend to earn more money is too ambiguous to have any positive results. Earning more money can mean earning an extra penny or an extra billion dollars. Instead of simply deciding that you want to earn more money, decide exactly how much more you intend to earn. Whether your intention is to increase your earnings by 5 percent or 500 percent, get clear. Once you know your intention, write down all the reasons you intend to earn more money, the benefits you will experience as a result and the consequences you will suffer if you dont reach your intention. Make your list as detailed and as expansive as possible. Let your reasons sink in and become part of your everyday life. Make It Happen The final step is one that few ever take. Many people want to earn more money, and some know exactly how much more they want to make. Very few design a plan to make their intention a reality and fewer still exhibit the perseverance and d edication to reach their intention. Operating from a place of intention, made real by emotions and planning will give you an edge over others as well as over your old needs-based self. But without action, focus and consistency, your intentions will slip into becoming wishes. While wishes may come true in Disney World, they seldom come true in the real world when not coupled with effort.

How to Become More Intriguing and Influential at Work
How to Become More Intriguing and Influential at Work Becoming influential and compelling at work doesnt so much have to deal with ones looks. For instance, when a Steve Balmer or Jack Welch enter a room (neither known for being particularly handsome), their aura quickly makes them the most attractive people in the space. Once they speak, people realize that its not the nice tie they are wearing, nor is it the expensive suit, but rather the quality of their character and raw passion for their profession, which makes them compelling and intriguing.Becoming an influential in corporate America means having that something. Among other things, it means being capable of formulating creative solutions to complex problemsit means being able to command respect while simultaneously displaying a warm character. Now that we have some of the traits of an individual who others would deem interesting in corporate America, lets further look into the variables that make people win over co-workers, subordinates and bosses. You Must Understand Before You Can Sway JudgmentIf you want to be able to change peoples opinion of you, you must first understand how human beings will form opinions of others around the office.Among the first things people learn about you are most likely conclusions drawn from your appearance. People make rapid-fire decisions based upon factors, such as your dress, your race, your body posture, hair color, height, weight, age, gender, etc. Before you open your mouth, you are stereotyped. As a general rule, nice and appropriate dress will make you appear more competent to an interviewer, client, fellow employee, etc. Moreover, those who are in shape will be conceived as stronger and more resilient than individuals who take less care of their bodies. While its not necessary to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars on how we look, it is still crucial to make our appearance c onducive to others believing that we can efficiently do a job. While we cant control our current clothing budget, a simple smile can make a very positive difference in our interactions with others. A smile can shape ones character more than an Armani suit.Compelling WorkersIn their book, Compelling People, authors John Neffinger and Matthew Kohut discuss how men and women are perceived by others. They argue that as a culture, we will expect men to be strong and authoritative (sometimes even a bit cold). At the office (and in life), men are often rewarded for such behavior. At work, men who display candor will be more likely to be thought of having leadership acumen than passive males. While bull-dozing and forcing their opinion on others can have devastating consequences, this behavior is accepted to an extent. On the flip side, for years women who have done the saatkorn were punished for their behavior. For years, women who displayed candor would be viewed as less warm. This widely he ld view made required female workers to be near perfect in their performance. Only in recent years has the workforce embraced women with strength, ambition and insight. Despite it going against best leadership practices, some male employers want to hire females who are more likable via an easy-going attitude.Getting Co-Workers to Like You MoreAround the office, much of your ability to influence rests on whether or not people like you. Regardless of sex, there are certain implementations everyone can incorporate into behavior, which will result in more positive interactions.1. Among other things, these include2. Being a strong listener.3. Becoming genuinely interested in others.4. Talking in terms of other peoples interests.5. Making people feel important regardless of title.6. Taking responsibility for mistakes. In the EndIts never too late to change into a compelling rolle around the office. Regardless of age, sex or appearance, we all strive to be regarded in a positive manner by o thers. To do so takes a comprehensive understanding of ourselves and those around us as well as some basic alterations in our professional approach and demeanor.

The Key to Pain-Free Performance Reviews
The Key to Pain-Free Performance ReviewsThe Key to Pain-Free Performance ReviewsFor some people performance reviews have a reputation as soul-crushing events in which employees are ranked against each other and rewarded based on favoritism. In recent years annual top-down performance appraisals based on numerical ratings have been replaced or supplemented with ongoing coaching, monthly and quarterly plans. Here are four tips to reduce employee stress when it comes to performance reviews.1. Provide ongoing coaching Most people are calm when it comes time for the performance review at our company, said Steve Hughes, a project manager at a civil engineering firm. We provide feedback along the way so they should already know where they stand. At his firm employees and supervisors or managers are encouraged to engage one another and provide/ask for constructive feedback as often as needed- even daily- to create a positive work culture.Seth Barnes, head of marketing at Savings.com, agrees that constant dialogue helps people know where they stand and whats expected of them. Checking in should be a regular thing, not just a formal meeting once a quarter where the stakes are so high.Hiring both managers and individual contributors who are accustomed to a company culture of ongoing feedback help reduce stress when it comes time for annual, mid-year or quarterly reviews. Ask candidates what their expectations are for giving and receiving feedback and probe for how they approach constructive criticism.Said Hughes, The right mentors can make people feel engaged and promote of feeling of worth and pride.2. Set a mix of realistic goals and challengesWe clearly define objectives and measure our performance against them, Barnes said. I like how these individual goals roll up into department, company and ultimate corporate goals.Tying company goals to personal goals gives employees a feeling of personal success as well as value. It feels good to look back at a goal and point to a specific metric showing the goal was met, Barnes said.At Hughes company, performance discussions are intended to be a recap of the past year with a summary of expectations or goals that were met, exceeded, or not met. This is not supposed to be the first time this is discussed, but sometimes it may be.A lack of ongoing coaching can backfire at review time if the project hasnt been going well. The danger is biting off a goal in the short term thats too audacious or simply unachievable and then having to call it a complete failure, Barnes said. When hiring, probe candidates about how they met or exceeded the actual goals of past positions, not just the accomplishments listed on their resume.3. Hire for motivation and also foster itYou want smart, analytical people who most importantly are motivated, said Barnes about his own team of online marketers. Ive found in the tech space that solving challenging problems and working in a group of like-minded people is what motivates many. But i ts not all up to the employee. Managers must be able to provide career guidance and resources. Often my team struggles with defining their goals, aspirations and potential resources for personal or professional growth, said Hughes. Sometimes we encourage peer-on-peer conversations for ideas or reaching out to other managers, human resource personnel for tips. parte of motivating employees is exposing them to more options to help them decide what new goals they want to pursue.Making sure everyone has something interesting to work on is key, Barnes said. When interviewing, probe candidates on how they evolved in past roles and what motivated them to perform. Question candidates for manager positions on how they assist in their direct reports development.4. Separate performance reviews from compensation discussionsHughes said that at his company compensation adjustments are done company-wide at a time outside of the semi-annual performance appraisals. This separates any conversational a nxiety that may be associated with compensation from the performance discussion. Without compensation to worry about, employees and managers can focus on whats most important goals and performance against those goals. When managers and their direct reports receive ongoing coaching, are aligned in terms of goals and challenges and are provided with motivating opportunities, performance review anxiety can become what it should be- a thing of the past.Read Related ArticlesMake Candidates an Offer They Cant RefuseThe Changing WorkforceBaby Steps to Meritocracy
